Wisdom Wednesday: Pre-Game Mindset with Coach Alicia
and confidence. Let’s dive into her tips and insights!
Mental Preparation Techniques
What’s Alicia’s go-to tip for getting in the zone before a game?
“LISTEN TO MUSIC! Hype yourself and your teammates up always. High energy at the start of a match sets you up for most things you may encounter. Plus, it makes everything a whole lot more fun when you hit the court on fire!”
Alicia believes that energy is contagious. The atmosphere you create before a match—whether it’s a pre-game playlist, a group chant, or dancing it out—can set the tone for success. Music has a unique way of connecting the team, building momentum, and helping players focus on the excitement of the game rather than the pressure.
Overcoming Pre-Game Nerves
To help her players manage nerves and approach the game with confidence, Alicia emphasizes communication and preparation:
“I like to talk to players about how they’re feeling pre-game. Being able to verbalize emotions is everything. It opens you up to new suggestions and helps you process what could happen during the match. Talking through scenarios and how you’ll handle different positions brings comfort and clarity.”
Alicia takes time to check in with her players individually and as a team. She encourages them to identify what’s causing their nerves and address it head-on. Whether it’s visualizing key plays or strategizing how to approach tough situations, these conversations give athletes the tools to feel ready and grounded when the whistle blows.
Setting the Right Mindset
Alicia suggests creating pre-game rituals to ground yourself and channel your energy into the match:
- Repeat a mantra or empowering statement to stay present and focused. Words like “I am prepared” or “We’ve got this” can help athletes block out distractions.
- Blast your favorite hype-up song and get moving—yes, even a little dance if you need to! Movement releases tension, boosts endorphins, and gets everyone in sync before the first serve.
“Pre-game hype is all about setting yourself up for anything you might encounter during the match,” Alicia shares. It’s not just about excitement—it’s about creating a mindset that can adapt, overcome, and perform.
Why Coaching Matters to Alicia
A former Prevail player, Alicia’s journey as an athlete shaped her approach as a coach. Having played at Palmyra High School, HACC, and Prevail from 2015-2018, she returned in 2023 to give back to the sport she loves.
Her coaching philosophy centers on more than just skills and strategy. Alicia believes in creating confident athletes by fostering teamwork, communication, and a positive team culture.
“Athletes can expect a coach who is fun, enthusiastic, and competitive, but also focused on growth. I strive to build a cohesive team that works together, has fun, and supports one another.”
Alicia goes beyond the game to create an environment where players can thrive both on and off the court. “Seeing my players grow as athletes and as individuals makes every moment worth it,” she says.
