Wisdom Wednesday: Handling Pressure with Coach Ed
How Coach Ed Prepares Players for Pressure
For Coach Ed, the key to handling pressure lies in preparation. He believes that players can only thrive under pressure if they’ve experienced similar challenges in practice.
“Pressure is part of every match,” Ed explains. “I prepare my players by putting them in stressful practice situations so they’re ready when those moments arise in tournament play. Embracing pressure allows them to stay sharp and focused.”
Ed also stresses the importance of goal-setting as a tool for managing pressure. “When players focus on real, achievable goals, they shift their mindset from pressure to purpose. It’s no longer about avoiding failure—it’s about striving for something meaningful.”
By blending preparation with purpose, Ed ensures his players are both mentally and physically ready to compete.
Managing Expectations Under Pressure
One of the biggest challenges for athletes is managing expectations, both internal and external.
“My players often put immense pressure on themselves to perform at a high level,” says Ed. “When their performance doesn’t meet their expectations, anxiety can take over. I remind them that mistakes are part of the game, not a reason to doubt their skills.”
Ed focuses on building confidence by reinforcing his players’ abilities. “I tell them, ‘One bad pass or missed serve doesn’t mean it’s time to try a different sport.’ Mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow, not reasons to give up.”
Through consistent encouragement, Ed helps his players see pressure as a normal, even beneficial, part of competition.
A High-Pressure Success Story
In a recent tournament, Coach Ed’s approach to handling pressure was put to the test. One of his most reliable players was struggling in serve receive, and her confidence took a hit.
“She was visibly upset, and her self-talk was spiraling,” Ed recalls. “We had a quick conversation about expectations, pressure, and how vital she was to the team. I temporarily moved her to a different role, giving her a chance to reset without feeling overwhelmed.”
The adjustment worked. After a few points, the player regained her composure and was back to playing at her usual high level.
“This moment was a reminder of how important it is to meet players where they are and give them the support they need to succeed,” Ed shares.
Why Coaching Matters to Coach Ed
Coach Ed’s journey as an athlete began at Susquehanna Community High School and continued at Rutgers University, where he developed a deep appreciation for hard work and teamwork. Coaching is his way of giving back to the Prevail program, which has made a significant impact on his family.
“My philosophy is simple: hard work and time invested by the individual translates into success as a team,” he explains. “When players dedicate themselves to growth, the entire team benefits.”
Ed’s players can expect a coach who listens, creates opportunities for success, and prioritizes personal growth alongside athletic performance.
Building Resilience On and Off the Court
For Coach Ed, the lessons learned from handling pressure in volleyball extend far beyond the game. “Whether it’s on the court, in school, or in life, learning how to stay calm and focused under pressure is an invaluable skill,” he says.
Through preparation, encouragement, and thoughtful coaching, Ed equips his players with the tools to navigate challenges with confidence and resilience.
