Take the Court with our Player of the Week: Matthew S.
ed by a dream of playing at the Division I level. Let’s dive into why Matthew is our Player of the Week and how his commitment to growth is setting the tone for his season—and his future.
The Beginning: A Neighborhood Connection That Sparked a Passion
For Matthew, volleyball wasn’t something he sought out—it found him through a simple moment of connection with his neighbor.
“I first got involved with volleyball because of my neighbor.”
That introduction turned into hours in the gym, countless reps, and a growing passion that would eventually lead him to Prevail Volleyball Club, where his skills—and his love for the game—took off.
Why Prevail? A Second Family with Purpose
What sets Prevail apart for Matthew is its family atmosphere—a place where coaches care, friendships are real, and the focus is always on getting better, together.
“I love the family nature, the coaches, and the friends I’ve made.”
That environment is what keeps him showing up—pushing himself and encouraging his teammates to do the same.
Strongest on the Court: Defense that Delivers
When it comes to his biggest strength on the court, Matthew doesn’t hesitate: defense. He’s developed a strong read of the game and a quick first step—skills that help keep rallies alive and give his team a second chance.
“Defense is my strongest skill.”
He credits his development to two key coaches who have shaped his game:
“Coach Brie and Coach Kenny helped me get to where I am now.”
With their guidance, Matthew has built a reputation as a steady, reliable player on the back row.
Biggest Asset? A Positive Mindset
Volleyball is as much mental as it is physical, and Matthew knows the importance of staying upbeat, even when the game gets tough.“My biggest asset to the team is my positive mindset.”
Whether his team is up or down, he keeps the energy steady, the communication strong, and the focus forward.
Current Focus: Improving Serve Receive
While defense is his go-to strength, Matthew is currently putting in the work to improve another critical skill: serve receive.
“I’m focused on improving my serve receive.”
Sharpening this area of his game will make him even more complete in the back row—and give his setters and hitters the consistency they need to run the offense effectively.
What Keeps Him Going: D1 Dreams
When asked what motivates him to grind through long practices, tough drills, and pressure moments, Matthew’s answer is clear:
“The thought of going D1.”
That dream drives every rep, every adjustment, and every early morning. It's more than a goal—it’s his fuel.
What’s Next for Matthew?
With a strong foundation in defense, a growth mindset, and a vision for where he wants to go, Matthew is on a mission. As he continues to lead through positivity and push his limits, he’s not just preparing for this season—he’s building a future.
