Take the Court with our Player of the Week: Marcelo

This week, we’re spotlighting Marcelo from 17 Platinum—a player whose journey started in the sand but has turned into a passion for competitive volleyball. With his sights set on growing as an outside hitter and pushing himself to new heights—literally—this season, Marcelo is putting in the work to elevate both his game and his team. Let’s dive into why Marcelo is our Player of the Week and what makes him a key force on 17 Platinum.

From Sand to the Court: A Love for Volleyball Begins

Marcelo’s volleyball journey started with summer sand volleyball before his freshman year of high school. What began as a fun way to play with friends at a local park soon turned into a competitive drive to become the best player he could be.

“The summer before 9th grade, I used to play sand

volleyball with my friends from school at a park close to my house.”

That love for the game led him to Prevail Volleyball Club, where he found an environment that pushes him to improve while allowing him to be himself and grow with confidence.

Why Prevail? A Place to Compete and Improve

For Marcelo, Prevail is more than just a club—it’s a family where both players and coaches create an atmosphere of support and growth.

“My favorite things about Prevail are the players and the coaches. I always feel like I can be myself and I wouldn’t be looked down upon because of my mistakes.”

That level of trust and encouragement has helped him develop his skills and his confidence, making him a stronger, more resilient competitor.

Big Goals for a Big Season

Marcelo has set clear, ambitious goals for himself this year, all focused on individual growth and team chemistry:

1️⃣ Get to know all of his new teammates
2️⃣ Improve his vertical jump by a few inches
3️⃣ Increase his capability as a hitter and blocker

“My main goals for this season are to get to know all of my new teammates, improve my vertical by a couple of inches, and increase my capability as a hitter and blocker.”

These goals reflect Marcelo’s commitment to personal improvement while also making sure he builds strong connections with his teammates—because volleyball is a team game at its core.

Putting in the Work: A Plan for Success

Marcelo knows that talent alone won’t get him where he wants to be. He’s dedicated to putting in the extra time and effort to reach his full potential.

“I plan to put as much time as I can into playing volleyball and trying my hardest throughout my practices and tournaments.”

His relentless work ethic shows in the way he approaches training, competitions, and even the smallest details of his game.

Areas of Growth: Becoming a More Versatile Hitter and Blocker

While Marcelo is already a strong outside hitter, he’s laser-focused on refining his skills to become an even bigger weapon for his team.

“I am working on my timing and positioning for blocking, and my toolbox when hitting.”

By improving his shot selection, defensive reads, and blocking technique, Marcelo is making sure that he maximizes his impact on every play.

Making His Team Better: The Bigger Picture

Every goal Marcelo has set isn’t just about his own success—it’s about what he can do to contribute to his team’s overall performance.

“These goals help me contribute to the team because they will allow me to be a more effective and efficient outside, increasing the amount of points I score for my team.”

By becoming a more consistent scorer and a stronger defensive presence, Marcelo is ensuring that 17 Platinum has the firepower and discipline to compete at the highest level.

A Gold Medal Mindset

When it comes to defining success for the season, Marcelo has one major goal in mind: winning an open tournament outside of the state.

“A milestone or accomplishment I’d be especially proud of this season is winning a gold medal in an open tournament outside of our state.”

That kind of achievement would represent not just his personal growth, but the hard work and determination of his entire team.

What’s Next for Marcelo?

Marcelo’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to constant improvement make him an invaluable part of 17 Platinum. As he continues building his skill set, pushing his physical limits, and strengthening his role on the team, he’s setting himself up for an incredible season ahead.
