#ShePrevails - Athlete Edition: Celebrating the Legacy of National Women & Girls in Sports Day

Each year, National Women & Girls in Sports Day (NWGSD) serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, dedication, and accomplishments of female athletes across the country. Established in 1987 by the Women’s Sports Foundation, NWGSD was created to honor female sports pioneers, recognize the progress made toward gender equality in athletics, and inspire the next generation of young women to pursue their athletic dreams.

For female athletes at Prevail Volleyball Club, this day is more than just a celebration—it’s a reflection of their journey, the friendships they’ve built, and the role models who have inspired them along the way.

Sophie L. - Prevail 15 Pink: Building Bonds Through Volleyball

For Sophie L., volleyball isn’t just about competition—it’s about connection. The friendships she has made through her team are what she cherishes most. These relationships, built on trust and teamwork, have made every practice and every game more meaningful.

But being an athlete is also about perseverance. Sophie has learned firsthand that achieving goals requires effort, commitment, and resilience.

“If you really want it, you need to commit.”

Watching players like Jess Murzick has fueled her passion, as she admires Murzick’s leadership and dedication on the court.

Beyond her personal growth, Sophie hopes to be a role model for younger players—especially her sisters, who have recently developed an interest in the sport. To her, being a female athlete means setting an example, showing others that strength and commitment can open doors both on and off the court.

Honor K. - Prevail 15 Purple: Learning the Power of Teamwork

For Honor K., volleyball has been about more than just individual skill—it’s been a lesson in teamwork. The relationships she has built with her teammates have made the sport all the more rewarding. Learning to communicate, support others, and work toward a common goal has helped shape her beyond the court.

Athleticism, to Honor, isn’t just about physical strength—it’s about showing up and giving your all. Watching Lexi Rodriguez play has inspired her to hustle and put in the effort wherever she is. She embodies the idea that greatness isn’t just about talent—it’s about determination.

When Honor reflects on what it means to be a female athlete, she sees opportunity: the opportunity to play at a high level, to grow as a competitor, and to push herself to be better every day.

To her, #ShePrevails represents the perseverance of women in sports—the ability to fight, work hard, and prove their strength in every game.

Sierra R. - Prevail 16 Purple: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing the Game

For Sierra R., volleyball has provided her with a space to meet new people and embrace competition. She thrives in the energy of the game, always looking forward to the next match and the chance to push herself further.

Being an athlete has taught Sierra the value of resilience. Every day on the court is an opportunity to grow—not just as a player, but as a person. She looks up to Harper Murray, who has faced significant challenges in her life but has never given up. That perseverance, that refusal to quit despite obstacles, is what Sierra strives to embody in her own journey.

To Sierra, being a female athlete is about being the best version of herself and sharing her love for volleyball with others.

To her, #ShePrevails means standing strong, having confidence, and pushing through difficulties to reach new heights.
