From fostering a positive atmosphere to leading celebrations, Matthew’s dedication to uplifting his teammates is what makes him stand out. Let’s dive into why Matthew is our Player of the Week and how he brings joy and spirit to the court.

Meet Matthew: From Backyard Practice to Competitive Play

Matthew’s volleyball journey began during the pandemic, when he and his brother spent countless hours practicing together. What started as a way to pass the time turned into a passion that paved the way for his volleyball career.

“During Covid, I practiced with my brother who played volleyball at the time. I got pretty good by just peppering with him every day for almost a year.”

These backyard sessions weren’t just a way to improve his skills—they taught Matthew discipline, perseverance, and the joy of consistent effort. Now, he channels those lessons into every match and practice as a cornerstone of the Prevail family.

Building Team Spirit: Celebrations and Positivity

Matthew has a unique talent for building team spirit. Whether it’s finding creative ways to celebrate during a game or ensuring that everyone feels included, his positivity sets the tone for the team’s success.

“I love finding new and creative ways to celebrate with my team during a game. I try to make sure that the team never gets in a bad mood and that everyone stays on the same page.”

For Matthew, being a good teammate is about fostering connection and creating memories that last a lifetime.

“Being a good teammate to me means supporting and uplifting others. Moments like beating a team in a close match and celebrating together are what it’s all about.”

Leading By Example

As a leader, Matthew focuses on organization and encouragement. He understands that success starts with communication and teamwork, both on and off the court.

“I try to make sure to keep the team organized on the court and make sure everyone is on the same page. I also try to lead celebrations.”

But his leadership doesn’t stop there—Matthew goes the extra mile to help his teammates improve. Whether it’s staying after practice to help hitters get extra reps or supporting a teammate through a tough day, his actions speak louder than words.

“I always make sure to encourage my teammates to get better and support them if something is bothering them.”

The Fun Factor

While Matthew’s focus on improvement and leadership is evident, his ultimate goal is to make volleyball enjoyable for everyone.

“I really hope my teammates are having fun when they’re playing with me.”

From memorable moments like the Halloween practice to the excitement of intense matches, Matthew finds joy in the shared experiences that bring his team closer together. His enthusiasm is infectious, making every game and practice an opportunity for growth and connection.
